'Peaky Blinders' Takes Home the BAFTA TV Award for Best Drama Series”

ITV2 dating show Love Island scored a Bafta in the reality and constructed factual category but it was defeated by Blue Planet II for the Virgin TV must-see moment prize.

Three Girls also won the TV BAFTA for best mini-series and writer Nicole Taylor also dedicated the prize to the "real three girls" and those who helped blow the whistle on the scandal, health worker Sara Rowbotham and former detective Maggie Oliver.

Moving on to Doctor Who, she joked about Jodie Whittaker taking over the Tardis.

Sean Bean won the award for Leading Actor for his performance as a Catholic priest in Broken against Joe Cole for the "Hang the DJ" episode of Black Mirror, Tim Piggott-Smith for King Charles III and Jack Rowan for Born to Kill.

On the comedy front, "This Country" won Best Comedy Series over "Catastrophe", "Chewing Gum" and "Timewasters".

The cast of Three Girls praised the social workers and police officers who risked their jobs, while accepting their award for the drama, which told the real story of abused and sexually exploited school girls from Rochdale. The docudrama Murdered for Being Different was presented with the award for single drama.

It was not a successful night for diverse nominees.

In comedy, This Country took the big win, while performance nods went to Daisy May Cooper for This Country and Toby Jones for The Detectorists.

Britain's Got Talent won entertainment programme and Casualty was named best soap and continuing drama.

American series "Big Little Lies" and "The Handmaid's Tale" are among nominees in the global category of these British awards.

John Motson was honored with a special award on the same day he retired from sports commentary.

Earlier, as guests were arriving, police were called when a man in his 20s was stabbed outside the National Theatre on the Southbank, London several hours before the Baftas began at the Royal Festival Hall nearby.
