USA offers to help N. Korea's economy if it 'quickly' denuclearizes

USA offers to help N. Korea's economy if it 'quickly' denuclearizes”

North Korea said Saturday that it will dismantle its nuclear test site on May 23-25, in a dramatic event that would set up leader Kim Jong Un's summit with President Donald Trump next month.

Trump and Kim will meet June 12 in Singapore. "We will both try to make it a very special moment for world peace!" he had said.

"South and North Korea confirmed the common goal of realizing, through complete denuclearization, a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula".

"I really think he wants to do something and bring his country into the real world", Trump said. "We ask that you continue to pray for the people of North Korea and for the release of all who are still being held".

"We are happy for the hostages and their families", the Warmbiers said in a statement Wednesday.

Kim Dong Chul, a South Korean-born USA businessman and pastor, is the longest-known US detainee in North Korea, having spent at least 900 days in custody.

The Southeast Asia city-state has long acted as a bridge between the United States and China, with successive prime ministers offering Oval Office occupants their cherished geopolitical counsel.

Trump also said he wanted to pay his "warmest respects" to the family of Otto Warmbier, the American who was released by the North Koreans in a vegetative state, only to die days later.

Singapore will also be acceptable to China, North Korea's only major ally, which wields a strong influence despite its physical absence from next month's proceedings.

In December Kim declared his nuclear force as complete following the country's most powerful nuclear test to date in September and also three flight tests of intercontinental ballistic missiles created to reach the USA mainland.

The report added that an "in-depth discussion" was held on "practical matters" and procedures for holding the North Korea-U.S. summit and that Kim "reached a satisfactory consensus" on the issues discussed with Pompeo.

So far, the North Korean regime has made vague pledges to "denuclearize" but has not spelled out what that means, when it would happen or how it would be implemented.

"So those were the initial steps that the North Koreans took".

And Pompeo said the United States would remain on board to help develop the North's economy, which has been devastated by its own mismanagement and crippling global sanctions.

One risk in the U.S. president's decision, which he forecast over several months, is sending the wrong message to the North Korean leader that the United States can't be trusted to honour its commitments.

In rejecting the Iran deal, Mr Trump equated Iran's right to a civilian nuclear programme as a path to a nuclear weapon. "If he doesn't see material progress to that, there's not going to be a deal for a deal's sake", she said.

"We would like to express our deep appreciation to the United States government, President Trump, Secretary Pompeo, and the people of the United States for bringing us home", they said.

Trump's high-profile meeting offers a glimmer of hope of a breakthrough, according to Republican Sen.

While some White House aides characterized Trump's moves as evidence of bold thinking, there is also concern that he has little sense of the potential repercussions from some of his big moves, believing that if things don't work out, that he can always just reverse course.

Rumors of the trip intensified through the weekend, but it was only late on Monday afternoon that we were told we'd leave from the State Department at 7:45 that night.

But before any technical talk about reprocessed fuel rods, separated plutonium or spent fuel removal, Trump will want to answer one basic question - whether North Korea wants to change.

All observation facilities and research institutes would be removed, along with guards, it said, "and the surrounding area of the test ground be completely closed".
