Alexa gains eight new voices - but they're for developers for now”

But their addition could make some of Alexa's skills more engaging - especially those involving different characters, like an adventure story or game, for example.

While no vehicle maker is offering the fully integrated experience yet, Amazon is promising much the same - the ability to do searches, navigation, home automation, check your calendar and more. "You can even use an Amazon Polly voice for every utterance in your skill if you like".

It's all part of Amazon Polly, which was created for Alexa developers back in 2017.

The bank used the Alexa Skills Kit to create the services. It's as easy as that.

The preview will give developers access to eight different voices via Polly, the Amazon Web Services text-to-speech service that uses deep learning to synthesize speech that sounds like a human voice. We'll select a subset of the skills that apply, and will provide more information to those selected.

While the speech engine today supports a couple dozen languages, only the U.S. English voices are being offered to Alexa developers at this time. An Alexa Skills Kit comprises tools, application programming interfaces (APIs), code samples and documentation to enable developers to add skills to the 10,000-plus voice recognition capabilities already available on Alexa.
