Anne Frank's dirty jokes revealed

Anne Frank's dirty jokes revealed”

Two new pages from Anne Frank's diary have been published, containing a handful of dirty jokes and her thoughts on sex.

It turns out the pages contained four jokes about sex that Anne herself described as "dirty" and an explanation of women's sexual development, sex, contraception and prostitution.

The Anne Frank House photographed the pages with a high- resolution camera and a light shining on them during a regular check on the diary's condition in 2016. She wrote the recently discovered pages on September 28, 1942 at the age of 13, about three months after the Frank family went into hiding, and later covered them up with brown paper, the Associated Press reports. "They make it clear that Anne, with all her gifts, was above all also an ordinary girl".

Inside a secret annex above her father's office, Anne Frank edited passages from her first diary, the book that captured a teenager's experience of the Holocaust.

But it also said that the pages "do not alter our image of Anne".

In addition to the jokes, Anne summarizes what a period is, describes the mechanics of sex in couched terms, and relays what she has heard of prostitution.

On prostitution, she wrote: "All men, if they are normal, go with women, women like that accost them on the street and then they go together".

Reflections of tourists and canal houses are seen in the window of the Anne Frank museum in Amsterdam April 24, 2013. Only Anne Frank's father, Otto, survived the Holocaust.

"Anne Frank writes about sexuality in a disarming way".

Frank Van Vree, director of the Netherlands Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies, said the jokes are of the sort that are "classics among growing children".

Anne Frank House museum executive director Ronald Leopold, says that 'like every adolescent she is curious about this subject [of sex]'.

The hidden pages had been covered with gummed brown paper - apparently to hide her risqué writing from her family. And she wrote openly about her menstruation and conversations with van Pels on sex and sexuality.

The Anne Frank House addressed moral considerations in deciphering a text that its author did want read.

After the war, Otto Frank had his daughter's diary published, and it went on to become a symbol of hope and resilience that has been translated into dozens of languages.

Anne, who died in a Nazi concentration camp before she turned 16, would have written the passages aged between 13 and 15.

"She was probably afraid that other people she was hiding with, either her father, her mother or the other family would discover her diary and would read these things", Leopold said.
