Arsenal next manager: Mikel Arteta expected to be appointed this month”

Arsenal are reportedly planning to accelerate their appointment of Mikel Arteta as Arsene Wenger's successor after seeing a number of other candidates drop out.

The former French Gunner has been linked with the vacant position at the Emirates but Vieira, now head coach of MLS side New York City FC, has apparently been left "disappointed" after being contacted by Arsenal.

Former Arsenal midfielder Mikel Arteta could be named as Arsene Wenger's replacement after holding talks with the club and is considering offering Santi Cazorla the opportunity to join his backroom staff, according to the Independent. Not the board, however, who instead are "close" to appointing 36-year-old Arteta.

The former midfielder is now the head coach at New York City FC and he has been tipped for a big future in management.

Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri was at one point the leading contender to take over at the Emirates Stadium, but it is now claimed a deal to bring the Italian to London is unlikely, while a potential deal for former Barcelona manager Luis Enrique hit a stumbling block over the Spaniard's wage demands.

Another candidate was Hoffenheim's Julian Nagelsmann, but the German club recently insisted he will still be their manager next season.

Vieira fears he will be overlooked and that his chance to return to Arsenal in a management position has gone.
