Back to School-Man Arrested,1st Ld-Writethru, TX”

There's no indication as to how long Gilstrap-Portley would have continued playing if he weren't caught, or whether he would've taken up a new name and come back to play even more high school ball after graduation.

A 25-year old Mesquite man was jailed after posing as a 17-year old Hurricane Harvey evacuee to enroll in a Dallas high school last year.

Because of the damage to public records by the devastation of Hurricane Harvey, some schools still do not have access to student and vital statistics information.

Gilstrap-Portley enrolled at Hillcrest, saying he was homeless after being displaced by the storm. A few months after attending Skyline, he made a decision to try his luck at Hillcrest High School. This year, he used Hurricane Harvey as cover to attempt to relaunch his basketball career.

Gilstrap-Portley, who apparently had a moderately successful stint as a guard for Dallas Christian College's basketball team from 2013-2014, got his wish when he landed a starting role on Hillcrest's team.

The safety of our students at Hillcrest High School is our top priority.

The mother of a 14-year-old female student told the paper he dated her daughter while at Hillcrest High. "I don't know what, how [the school] let this slip through the cracks".

Gilstrap-Portley's ruse was finally uncovered when one of his former coaches saw him playing and notified officials stating "one of my former players who graduated a time ago is playing for you".

For nine months a 25-year-old man pretended to be a teenager just to be able to play high school football.

The faux high school star faces a charge of tampering with government records, per the News. He is now out on bond.
