Bobby Brown, Cissy Houston remember Whitney Houston in powerful Whitney trailer

Bobby Brown, Cissy Houston remember Whitney Houston in powerful Whitney trailer”

The trailer for Whitney places "heart" as a pivotal point in the documentary, which is appropriate, as it is the first Whitney Houston documentary to be made with the permission of the Houston family estate.

Whitney debuted at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival in a midnight screening on Wednesday and the first official US trailer just hit the web.

It seems the producers held nothing back and dove deep into Houston's life to answer long-standing questions about her drug use, her turbulent marriage, and her relationship with Robyn Crawford who is referred to as her "safety net" in the trailer.

Balancing the overall seriousness and somber tone of the trailer is a clip of Houston going in on another star of the times, Paula Abdul.

Houston's assistant and close friend Robyn Crawford appears to be a huge topic in the documentary, as the film explores the nature of their relationship and even suggest Bobby Brown wasn't too keen on it. "Bobby was jealous", an unidentified voice says.

"Paula Abdul ain't s-", she says to her mother. "He wanted to be in the forefront, and eventually she stepped down to lift him up".

"There were times when I looked up to God and I'd go, 'Why is this happening to me?'" Houston says in one scene, reflecting on her rise to celebrity and its downfalls.

'I never knew there was any addiction, ' Reid asserts. "That girl is singing off-key on the record". And she said to me, "I just don't understand what happened, she was the most lovely girl, ' and this was someone who knew her really well".

If you need us before then, we'll be refining our "I Will Always Love You" rendition.

"So I think it was the combination of thinking there's this really interesting personal mystery, but also how this woman was a musical genius", Macdonald continued.

The first trailer for "Whitney", a documentary premiering at the Cannes Film Festival and hitting theaters this summer, includes footage of Houston trashing Abdul's voice.
