Democrats to force vote Wednesday on net neutrality

Democrats to force vote Wednesday on net neutrality”

Hassan says a group of 50 Senators is in favor of a measure that would reinstate net neutrality rules and a vote could come as soon as Wednesday. By doing so, internet service providers such as Verizon and AT&T will be able to prioritize certain online traffic over others, effectively ending "net neutrality".

If Senate Democrats are successful in reaching the majority, the resolution will go to on to the GOP-controlled House of Representatives, where its passage would be more hard, according to CNN. Susan Collins of ME, is expected to pass in the Senate but its future in the GOP-led House is doubtful and President Donald Trump is unlikely to back it. "From the GOP tax scam, to attacks on the Affordable Care Act, to rolling back fuel economy standards, and to net neutrality, the Trump administration has repeatedly ignored the needs of everyday American families".

The measure, which is backed by all 49 Democrats and Republican Sen.

On Thursday, the FCC said the Obama net neutrality rules will expire on June 11 and the new regulations approved in December handing providers broad new power over how consumers can access the internet will take effect. White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said Trump supports the FCC's effort to roll back burdensome regulations, as well as a "free and fair Internet".

While stranger things have happened, that seems like a tall order for a President who has routinely indicated he has absolutely no earthly idea what net neutrality even is. Bill Nelson, (D-Fla.), said.

Representatives from Stonyfield are anxious, among other things, that Internet Service Providers could start charging more for access to some websites and services.

As Michael Cheah, general counsel at the video site Vimeo, told CNNMoney, the point of the rules is "allowing consumers to pick the winners and losers and not [having] the cable companies make those decisions for them".

Senate Democratic Leader Charles Schumer said the issue will energize voters in November's congressional elections, when a number of lawmakers in President Donald Trump's Republican Party may be vulnerable. To do it, they must submit a disapproval resolution within 60 days after Congress receives the rule, excluding days when the legislature isn't in session.

How likely is Congress to reverse the FCC's action?

"It isn't. In fact, it's very weak".

The distinction is a crucial one, according to Tom Wheeler, a former FCC Chairman during the Obama administration.

Internet service providers, for their part, see the FTC as the appropriate agency to govern their business.

"Policing complex and highly technical industries has always been the FTC's bread and butter, and the agency is built to evolve alongside the businesses it oversees", said USTelecom, the self-described "leading trade association" for broadband service providers in the United States, in a statement. Wheeler noted that both Verizon and Comcast have argued before courts for the right to do so.

Still, the CRA route does have the benefit of forcing net neutrality opponents to put their disdain for the internet and the will of the public down on paper ahead of the looming midterms.
