Google partially rolls back Chrome 66's autoplay changes

Google partially rolls back Chrome 66's autoplay changes”

Developer Benji Kay, who specializes in audio tools and games for the web, explained that postponing the policy will not fix the many issues that have appeared.

The original muting of the nuisance videos within Chrome was created to remove one of the annoyances that might have pushed users to install adblocking or other software, something Google wants to avoid as advertising is the primary source of the company's revenue.

Google rolled out Chrome 66 earlier this month and it brought new autoplay blocking functionality to the world's most popular web browser. While that was a welcome goal, the update also had some unintended consequences for fans of web-based games. The browser began with a list of 1,000 websites where Google found that users typically played audio or video with sound.

However, the unintended outcome of silencing web games has prompted Google to temporarily remove the autoplay policy for the Web Audio API, which is used by many web games.

Google says the autoplay policy will be reapplied with Chrome 70 in October, giving developers a chance to rework their projects' code to support the new API.

Google developer advocate Myles Borins confirmed yesterday that the audio pausing policy would be temporarily rolled back.

Meanwhile, the implementation delay is created to give "Web Audio API developers (e.g. gaming, audio applications, some RTC features) more time to update their code".

However, while Google is planning to bring back the policy in October, Pallett noted that Google has yet to solve a "non-trivial user interface challenge with a lot of nuances".

The Chromium team confirms: "We've updated Chrome 66 to temporarily remove the autoplay policy for the Web Audio API".

We are still exploring options to enable great audio experiences for users, and we will post more detailed thoughts on that topic here later.
