Kerala Tourism tweet inviting Karnataka MLAs deleted”

In a tweet now deleted, the Kerala government's tourism department invited newly elected lawmakers in neighbouring Karnataka to "unwind" at its resorts after the rough and tumble of the Karnataka assembly elections, results for which were announced on Tuesday. The Kerala Tourism department had extended the invitation through its official twitter handle. This, after the BJP emerged as the single largest party but failed to cross the halfway mark. While netizens were sparring over the tweet, some seasoning it with their own spices to the now common horse-trading business of politics, the Congress and the JD (S) made a decision to host MLAs at the Shangri-La Hotel in Bangalore.

"After the rough and tumble of the #KarnatakaVerdict, we invite all the MLAs to unwind at the safe and handsome resorts of God's Own Country", Kerala Tourism tweeted, with the hashtags Karnataka verdict and 'Come Out And Play.' A photo of a stunning backwater resort in Kerala accompanied the tweet.

Resort politics have always been a part of Karnataka's political history, going as far back as 1984 when former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister NT Rama Rao brought MLAs of the Telugu Desam Party to Karnataka during a political rift. Both the Congress and JD (S) have accused the BJP of approaching their MLAs.

Even as all eyes stayed glued to the twists and turns in the counting of votes and political parleys in Karnataka on Tuesday evening, a tweet by Kerala Tourism seemingly stole the limelight. The JDS got 38 seats.

However, it may not just have been merely a marketing strategy to sell Kerala's beaches and hills in Karnataka, a state which made "resort" politics a staple in India's history.

Whenever there is a hung assembly post elections, talks of "horse trading" and "MLA poaching" start doing rounds.
