Saudi Football Federation suspend World Cup referee Fahad al-Mirdasi over bribery”

Federation Internationale de Football Association released a statement requesting for more information after Saudi Arabia banned one of their own referees for life over a match-fixing attempt weeks before he was due to fly to Russia for the World Cup.

According to the SAFF, 32-year-old Al Mirdasi contacted an Al Ittihad official, who handed the messages over.

Mirdasi eventually confessed to soliciting Sanayeh for money to influence the outcome of the match, which resulted in the Saudi star being given a lifetime ban.

While SAFF has opted to ban Al Mirdasi with immediate effect and "to deprive him from participating in any football activity for life", it has also requested FIFA to prevent him from officiating at the upcoming World Cup.

It now emerges that he confessed to offering to fix Saturday's King's Cup final on behalf of Al Ittihad club, according to the Saudi FA which added that it had requested Federation Internationale de Football Association to confirm the lifetime global ban as well as removing him from the World Cup list.

He was replaced overseeing the King's Cup final by Mark Clattenburg, who was set to be selected for the World Cup before leaving England previous year to take a job heading refereeing in Saudi Arabia. "He asked for an illegal sum of money in exchange for helping his team win the game", it said. "Following the investigations, the Saudi Federation received the report of the competent authorities, which proved the charge against the referee under his personal confession of the request for bribery".

Mirdasi was once the golden boy of the Saudi Football Federation, refereeing in 2016 Rio Olympics and 2017 Confederations Cup in Russia.

Denied from participating in any football-related activity for life, the SAFF has also called on FIFA to withdraw Al Mirdasi from next month's World Cup, while approving his life ban on an worldwide level.
