Supreme Court to examine Centre's Cauvery management scheme today”

The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected Karnataka's petition for a stay on the finalisation of the draft Cauvery water-sharing scheme, PTI reported.

A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justice A.M. Khanwilkar and Justice D.Y. Chandrachud also sought to drop the clause which said that in case of dispute the matter would be decided by the Centre and same would be final and binding. The Karnataka government said during Wednesday's hearing it would like to file objections on the Centre's draft scheme on distributing the waters of the Cauvery river. "I wonder why he had not asked the same thing when the Congress was in power in Karnataka", the Minister said and thanked Stalin for greeting the BJP.

The DMK has also called for an all party meeting on May 17 - a day after the Supreme Court hearing in the case to chalk out next course of action on the Cauvery issue.

On 14 May, Union Water Resources Secretary, Upendra Prasad Singh, submitted the Centre's Cauvery Draft Action Plan.

The apex court had in its February verdict asked the Centre to frame the Cauvery management scheme, which also included creating the Cauvery Managament Board, within six weeks for release of water from Karnataka to Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry. The Centre, however, told the Supreme Court that it had failed to meet the May 3 deadline because Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the other ministers were busy with the Assembly elections in Karnataka.

It had modified the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT) award of 2007 and made it clear that it will not be extending time for this on any ground.

The apex court had slammed the central government for the "sheer contempt" of its orders by not framing a scheme to distribute Cauvery water among Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, and Puducherry.
