E.Coli Outbreak Expected to Worsen”

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has expanded its warning about an E. coli outbreak connected to romaine lettuce to cover all forms of romaine, including whole heads and hearts of romaine grown in the Yuma, Arizona, growing area.

An E.coli outbreak that has sickened almost 150 people in 29 states so far is likely to worsen, according to an update Tuesday from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 48 percent of those people with available information have been hospitalized, including 20 who developed kidney failure, according to the latest report from the CDC.

The last shipments of romaine lettuce from the Yuma growing region were harvested on April 16 and the harvest season is over, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Illnesses started on dates ranging from March 13, 2018 to May 2, 2018. And 75 people have been sick enough to need hospitalization. One death was in California.

While most strains of the bacteria E. coli are harmless, others can cause serious illness.

The health department is advising people that if they don't know where their romaine lettuce originated, they shouldn't eat it.

Symptoms of E. coli infection include diarrhea, severe stomach cramps and vomiting.

"It takes two to three weeks between when a person becomes ill with E. coli and when the illness is reported to CDC".
