Former England footballer and World Cup victor Ray Wilson dies aged 83”

Singled out by then-Huddersfield manager Bill Shankly as a strong and pacy left-back, he went on to make 63 appearances for the Three Lions between 1960 and 1968. The northern English team said Wilson, who played for the club for most of his career, continued to attend matches despite being diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2004.

Huddersfield posted a touching tribute to their late, great player on Wednesday afternoon.

Sir Bobby and Ray were part of Sir Alf Ramsey's England team who claimed a memorable World Cup triumph in 1966, beating West Germany 4-2 in the final at Wembley.

On the club's official twitter it wrote: "Everton Football Club is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former player, FA Cup victor and World Cup hero, Ray Wilson MBE".

Ray Wilson, a former England footballer and 1966 World Cup victor, has died aged 83.

The club said it was " devastated" to learn of his passing and said its thoughts were with his wife Pat and his sons Russ and Neil.

He moved to Everton in 1964 and won the FA Cup in five years with the team.

Wilson sold his World Cup winner's medal in 2002.

After soccer, he worked for his father-in-law's undertaker business. One of our very few World Cup winners.

On hearing of his death many of his former colleagues have been quick to pay their respects to one of the most complete footballers of his generation as well as the two clubs which he represented for the majority of his career.
