Google Doodle pays tribute to Art Deco artist Tamara de Lempicka

Google Doodle pays tribute to Art Deco artist Tamara de Lempicka”

Today, on what would have been her 120th birthday, Google pays tribute to Lempicka with a Doodle in her signature style.

Tamara de LempickaWho was Tamara de Lempicka?

She made her first portrait, of her younger sister, when she was 10 after taking issue with how badly a local artist employed by her mother had depicted her. "I paint those who inspire me and make me vibrate".

Her grandmother then took her on a tour of Italy where she developed an interest in art.

"Few artists embodied the exuberant roaring twenties more than Polish artist Tamara de Lempicka", Google Doodle artist Matthew Cruickshank said.

Maria Górska, later Tamara de Lempicka, was born on May 16, 1898 in Warsaw, Poland to Russian Jewish attorney Boris Gurwik-Górski and Polish socialite Malwina Decler. "As a young child, she spent a summer in Italy with her grandmother, who inspired her love for great Italian Renaissance painters", Google reported.

"Upon her parents' divorce, she was sent to live with her wealthy aunt in Russian Federation".

In 1915 she fell in love with the Polish lawyer, Tadeusz Lempicki, who was to be her future husband the following year.

Lempicka moved in with her wealthy aunt in Russian Federation after her parents got divorced and met her future husband, Tadeusz Lempicki. Along with other members of her family they escaped the revolution by fleeing to Paris.

The artist's breakthrough came in 1925 when she exhibited paintings at two major venues at the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts.

Lempicka and her husband had a daughter named Kizette, her only child.

She would disappear from the art world for almost 20 years, before making a brief reappearance in the 1960s.

Her paintings were appreciated in the 1960s and 1970s even more than they had been when she first unveiled them because of the resurgence of Art Deco.

Described as a The Baroness with a Brush, Tamara Lempicka is hailed for her distinctive Art Deco style.

"I first encountered Lempicka's work at her Royal Academy show in London, 2004. It's no easy feat to recreate any artists work - but I hope to have done so here".

In 1928 she divorced her husband and became the mistress of Baron Raoul Kuffner.

Additionally she had relationships with women and during the height of her success in the 1930s befriended prominent bisexual and lesbian artists Vita Sackville-West, Violet Trefusis and Colette.

Lempicka died on March 18, 1980 - she was aged 81. "During this period she painted the likes of King Alfonso XIII of Spain and Queen Elizabeth of Greece", the news site reported.
