HBO, Sky team on Amy Berg's "The Case Against Adnan Syed"

HBO, Sky team on Amy Berg's

The four-hour series will be directed by Academy Award nominee Amy Berg, who previously helmed crime documentaries Deliver Us From Evil and West Of Memphis.

HBO is teaming with the UK's Sky Atlantic to release a documentary series following the murder case and conviction of Adnan Syed, the subject of the first season of the popular podcast "Serial" from 2014.

Syed, who has maintained his innocence, was given a life sentence for Lee's murder in 2000.

In June 2016, a Baltimore Circuit Court Judge vacated Syed's conviction and granted him a new trial after new evidence challenged the reliability of cell phone data linking Syed to the crime scene, and a long-awaited alibi witness took the stand.

In production since 2015, the documentary series closely re-examines the events leading up to Hae Min Lee's disappearance.

In a statement, Sky said the series will present new discoveries and "ground-breaking revelations that challenge the state's case".

The saga of Adnan Syed, who was convicted of the murder of 18-year old Hae Min Lee in 1999, captivated the nation as the focus Sarah Koenig's inaugural season of Serial, which nevertheless left many questions unanswered about the unusual, labyrinthian crime.

As reported by the Baltimore Sun, the office of Attorney General Brian Frosh asked the Maryland Court of Appeals on Monday to overturn the lower-court ruling for the retrial.

It will air on Sky Atlantic in the United Kingdom and on HBO in North America. "The hugely talented Amy Berg has unprecedented access to those closest to the investigation, which is sure to make unmissable viewing".

Nick Cave will be scoring original music for the series.

Adnan Syed is about to be tried - again - in the court of public opinion.

A premiere date has not been announced.
