Mets outfielder (hip) placed on DL

Mets outfielder (hip) placed on DL”

"We were hoping with the off days and things like that that the progression of it would be where at some point this would go away while he was playing", the Mets manager said.

With Cespedes out, Brandon Nimmo and Juan Lagares are likely to receive more playing time.

With AP Photos. The New York Mets have placed outfielder Yoenis Cespedes on the 10-day disabled list with a strained right hip flexor. An MRI on Tuesday revealed the injury - picked up on May 6 - but the Mets made a decision to pull him from the lineup, stating he was available to pinch hit. Manager Mickey Callaway said NY hoped Cespedes could heal while playing, but the problem persisted. "So let's take a different route".

Cespedes, 32, has battled lower-body injuries throughout his tenure with the Mets. Last season saw him miss 81 games due to hamstring issues that were not properly addressed. The Mets won 12-2, allowing the team to make the DL stint retroactive and hopefully get Cespedes back by May 24.

"He could've continued to gut it out, continued to play", Callaway said.

Callaway said Cespedes has done "everything we asked of him" to keep his legs healthy.

Cespedes leads the Mets with eight home runs and 28 RBIs, and is batting.255 this season. In a corresponding move, Phillip Evans was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas to provide some extra depth in the outfield. The infielder opened the year with the team and had three at-bats before being sent down in which he went 0-3 with a strikeout.
