Trump to host Californians critical of state's immigration policies at White House

Trump to host Californians critical of state's immigration policies at White House”

In March, Sessions announced a lawsuit against the state's "sanctuary" policies, which limit local law enforcement's cooperation with federal immigration authorities. The case is pending.

"California's law provides safe harbor to some of the most vicious and violent offenders on Earth, like MS-13 gang members putting innocent men, women and children at the mercy of sadistic criminals", Trump claimed.

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders on Sunday described Trump's views on immigration as "heartless" during an interview on CNN's "State of the Union".

"She informed them and they all fled-or majority fled-and that whole operation took a long time to put together", Trump said.

On Tuesday, the San Diego City Council broke with the county and voted to support California's sanctuary laws.

Sam Abed, the mayor of Escondido, said before the sanctuary law passed, city officials regularly worked with ICE to see 2,700 illegal immigrant criminals deported, which he attributed to lowering crime rates back to 1980s levels.

"I mean, you talk about obstruction of justice, I would recommend that you look into obstruction of justice for the mayor of Oakland, California, Jeff", Trump said to Sessions who didn't respond. The Department of Justice had said in the wake of the raid that it was investigating.

In addition to criticizing the Oakland mayor, President Trump blamed democrats and Gov.

"The concept (of sanctuary laws) that we are even talking about is so ridiculous, " the president said.

Omar Jadwat, director of the ACLU's immigrants' rights project, said the ruling reinforced decisions from the 1990s, including one that struck down part of a federal gun control law that required local police to determine if buyers were fit to own handguns.

"Flying in a dozen Republican politicians to flatter him and praise his reckless policies changes nothing", he continued.

Trump also said the USA has the "the dumbest laws on immigration in the world".

At the table Wednesday were mostly elected officials and law enforcement leaders from Southern California, although Northern California had representation with Fresno County Sheriff Margret Mims and Stanislaus County Sheriff Adam Christianson. Since then, various other California cities have joined the DOJ's brief or expressed their opposition to the law, including Hesperia and Barstow.

"I'm greatly honored to be here with the courageous mayors and sheriff's and local leaders from California".

"Now we're going for the full funding for the wall, and we're going to try and get that as soon as possible", Trump said at a roundtable with California municipal leaders who favor his goal of making the USA border impervious to illegal immigration. "You've gone through a lot too, although it's become quite popular what you are doing".

Watch the President's comments above. "They want border security and they want protection".
