Centre Orders Ceasefire In Kashmir During Ramzan”

Students from the ruling BJP's youth wing held a protest in Jammu today after the Indian government announced a unilateral ceasefire in the Kashmir region for the month of Ramzan.

CM Mehbooba Mufti in a tweet had said: "I wholeheartedly welcome the Ramadan ceasefire and would like to thank PM Modi and Home Minister Rajnath Singh for their personal intervention. The government has been trying to create an environment free of terror and violence to enable the Muslim brothers to observe Ramzan in a peaceful manner and in conducive environment so that terrorists do not exploit their religious sentiments", the home ministry said.

Accordingly, the security forces are to reserve the right to retaliate, if attacked or if it is essential to protect the lives of innocent people.

Er Rasheed added that dozens of videos circulating in social media are ample proof to conclude that the black sheep in Jammu and Kashmir Police have brought a bad name to the entire police force, wh+-ich otherwise has a good number of God-fearing and pro-Kashmir elements in it.

The Centre on Wednesday pulled off a surprise by accepting Chief Minister Mebhooba Mufti's proposal to suspend anti-terror operations in J&K, saying the decision has been taken to help "peace-loving Muslims observe Ramzan in a peaceful environment".

The Modi government's unilateral suspension of counter-insurgency operations against terrorists in Kashmir during the holy month of Ramzan is a commendable move.

The forces will continue to to carry out operations based on specific intelligence (or if they come under attack), continue with area domination exercises, and keep protecting military convoys, sources said.

Earlier, Mehbooba Mufti had sought a ceasefire after holding an all-party meeting in Srinagar.

Former Chief Minister and National Conference leader Omar Abdullah asked the militants to reciprocate to provide relief to the people during the month of fasting.

The PDP General Secretary said it was high time for Pakistan and other stakeholders to take a stand on the step announced by the Central government which could prove to be a confidence building measure, leading to a meaningful and result oriented dialogue process that has the capacity to take Jammu and Kashmir out of the vicious cycle of mayhem, bloodshed and uncertainty.

He, however, said only Army operations would halt during Ramzan, not their "retaliation".
