Malaysian Police Seize 72 Bags of Cash, Jewels in Najib Razak Raids”

The raid on the properties in Kuala Lumpur's Pavilion Residences, where condominiums cost up to 30m ringgitt ($8m), produced the biggest haul yet, with police seen carting hundreds of orange boxes containing designer Hermes Birkin handbags into five police trucks. He declined to give details.

Police launched extensive searches of Mr Najib's home and a number of other sites starting on Wednesday as the new government headed by 92-year-old Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad presses forward with its pledge to bring him to justice.

USA investigators say Najib's associates stole and laundered $4.5billion from the fund.

Asked whether the goods were sufficient evidence to prosecute Najib, he said the decision was up to Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun.

Singh said police have carried out raids on six premises, which include the prime minister's office and the prime minister's official residence in Putrajaya and four private residences linked to the former premier.

Najib's large family home in an affluent neighbourhood of Kuala Lumpur was also part of the raid, with the road to his house cordoned off.

A police spokeswoman could not be contacted for comment.

Razak, 64, was ousted in recent parliamentary election after a nine year rule as Malaysia saw the six-decade-old ruling party losing - something which happened for the first time in the country's independent history.

Dr Mahathir said on Wednesday he will seek to recover funds diverted from 1MDB by reaching out to authorities in Switzerland, the US, Singapore and other jurisdictions.

"We have been waiting for this for such a long time", he said, expressing confidence that Anwar and Mahathir would work together.

Some of that money is alleged to have ended up in Najib's personal bank account, according to a civil lawsuit in the United States.

Last week, Malaysians broke national and worldwide records by electing Dr. Mahathir Mohamad to become the oldest elected leader in the world at 92 to save them from rising cost of living and a government that was engaged in many alleged corrupt practices.

"They are there to serve notice (to Najib) to attend MACC on Tuesday next week to record a statement related to SRC", one of the sources said.

"The money belongs to Malaysia and it came from 1MDB".

Mahathir was dragged out of retirement in the last two years when corruption allegations continued to mount against former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak, leading to street protests in November 2016 calling for his resignation.

"Prison officers and staff. were kind, they were compassionate, they were very supportive", he said of his time in jail.

Khairy Jamaluddin, the youth and sports minister in Najib's government, visited Najib at his house on election night and said this week the prime minister had been "calm" and "poised", but that the people around him were "stunned, shocked and sombre".

He said police took away some personal possessions including a couple of handbags.

"Probably he seems to be the right man.I am a bit more moderate and have a softer image", Anwar said.
