1st Test, Day 1: Pakistan Pounce As England's Top-Order Collapse

1st Test, Day 1: Pakistan Pounce As England's Top-Order Collapse”

Cook, in his 153rd consecutive Test, which equalled Australia great Allan Border s all-time record for successive appearances at this level, revived England with a fine 70.

Mohammad Abbas and Hasan Ali shared eight wickets for the tourists and Pakistan ended the day in a commanding position on 50-1.

Pakistan lost Imam-ul-Haq, trapped lbw to Stuart Broad for 4, early in the reply but Azhar Ali (18) and Haris Sohail (21) held out in the face of some probing seam bowling by Broad, Jimmy Anderson and Mark Wood.

A new global season started with some familiar problems for England, who stumbled to 43-3 after winning the toss and then lost their last five wickets for 16 runs in 4.4 overs to be dismissed for 184 soon after tea.

Earlier, England suffered collapses at both ends of their innings after home captain Joe Root made a decision to bat first when winning the toss, despite a green-tinged pitch and overcast conditions offering the promise of assistance to Pakistan´s pacemen.

Cook acknowledges that Pakistan are on top but believes England are not yet down and out.

Waqar Younis, the country's former cricket star, is set to ring the five-minute bell before the third day of England's Test match against Pakistan at Lord's.

At tea England were 165 for five, having slumped to 43 for three before lunch after home captain Joe Root had won the toss and batted.

Dawid Malan (six) also fell to the combination of Hasan and wicket-keeper Sarfraz.

Jonny Bairstow (27) and Ben Stokes (38) threatened to get going but could not stop the post-tea slide.

But the work of team fielding coach Steve Rixon, the former Australia wicket-keeper, was rewarded when Asad Shafiq held a hard catch at second slip edge after Jos Buttler, recalled as a specialist number seven, edged a drive off Hasan and fell for 14.

"Hearty congratulations to Cooky", Border said about Cook, who in his 12-year-long career has become England's leading run scorer.

It was the latest memorable Lord's incident for Amir, who took six wickets in a Test innings at MCC's headquarters in 2010 - the same match where his involvement in a spot-fixing scandal led to a jail sentence and a five-year ban from cricket. The last time these two teams played a test series against each other, was back in 2016 in England.
