Alberto: Heavy rains expected for Central Florida”

Locally, the highest winds were reported at New Smyrna Beach Municipal Airport, with 35 mph wind gusts for several hours and sustained winds of 20-21 mph.

"Rainfall and flooding potential will increase across the US Gulf Coast region and over much of the southeastern United States beginning Sunday and will continue into next week".

With conditions expected to worsen overnight officials are encouraging vacationers leaving the Gulf Coast on Monday to give themselves extra time. With that said, water rise should be relatively minimal and really will be from Crystal River northward along the Florida coast toward the Panhandle.

Gusty showers were to begin lashing parts of Florida on Sunday, and authorities were warning of the possibility of flash flooding. That was because the wind field east of the storm's center was so wide, Austin said. Maximum winds were 50 miles per hour. gusting to 65 miles per hour.

With Alberto nearing the Florida Panhandle Monday, we will still be on the wet side of the system and our rain chances will remain elevated.

The early storm doesn't necessarily mean hurricane season will be as busy as last year's though.

The one band of storms that moved through Volusia and Flagler counties Sunday morning delivered not quite a half inch of rain at Daytona Beach International Airport and anywhere from 1.3 to 1.5 inches of rainfall in parts of Flagler County, according to Skywarn spotters there.

It is forecast to drop as much as 30cm (12in) of rain across MS to western Georgia and to bring storm swells of about 60-120cm (2-4ft) to low-lying areas.

Subtropical Storm Alberto is a little better organized this morning and winds are at 45 miles per hour. And just as Memorial Day marked summer's unofficial start in the U.S., Alberto gave it the unofficial start of what forecasters recently predicted would be an active hurricane season. "We get water from other neighborhoods, and water can get up to a foot deep in some places". Rain looks like it will continue to hold off tomorrow, but National Weather Service maps state that tropical storm Alberto, moving in from the south, could start adding to the moisture in the area by Wednesday.
