Ebola outbreak 2018: Two infected patients flee treatment center in Congo

Ebola outbreak 2018: Two infected patients flee treatment center in Congo”

"The plan consists of surveillance, case investigation, contact tracing, case management, safe burials, community engagement, and social mobilization", the statement said.

Allarangar said health officials received an alert on Wednesday from Kinshasa's main hospital about a patient and had dispatched a team to investigate.

"The first patient, who was on the brink of being cured, left the hospital on Sunday evening", he said.

Health Ministry sources, who asked not to be named, said two police officers had been deployed to help track them down.

WHO's response chief warned that the fight to put an end to the Ebola outbreak is at a critical point.

The DRC health ministry on Tuesday announced six new confirmed Ebola cases and two more suspected cases, AP reported. Based on information gathered this week, World Health Organization also reported a total of 58 cases of the rare and deadly illness in the Congo outbreak. The overall caseload and death toll have been revised downwards, reflecting the fact that some samples have either tested negative for the haemorrhagic disease, or that any link to Ebola has been ruled out.

"Concerned about Iboko as access remains hard", Dr. Peter Salama, the World Health Organization's emergency response chief, said Tuesday on Twitter.

"UK aid's support for Gavi, the global vaccine alliance, has already helped to ensure thousands of vaccines have arrived in the Democratic Republic of Congo ready for distribution, and more are on their way". Of the confirmed Ebola cases, 14 are in Iboko, 10 are in Bikoro where the outbreak began and four are in the Wangata area of Mbandaka.

When Ebola hit West Africa in 2014, some of the obstacles that impeded the medical response included lack of trust among communities dealing with outbreaks and religious practices - such as washing the body of the dead - that spread the disease, which is contagious through bodily fluids.

"We're really just at the beginning", he said. "It's the detective work of epidemiology which will make or break the response to this outbreak".

Bogoch said in outbreaks like this one, people need to know that the teams on the ground are "really trying to help and that they're trying to help prevent the spread of this infection but also help individuals". Complicating factors include its spread to a major city, that health workers are among those infected and the existence of three or four "separate epicenters", making finding and monitoring the contacts of infected people more hard. "One associated with a funeral that took place in a neighboring town of Bikoro; one associated with a visit to a health care facility more than 80 kilometers (50 miles) away in the small village of Iboko and one where we're still gathering data on that's related to a church ceremony".

Congo's ninth recorded outbreak of the disease is thought to have killed at least 22 people so far, according to government figures released on Wednesday night - lower than the last estimate of 27 after some of those deaths turned out not to be related to Ebola.

WHO and the governments are working to roll out "pre-position" supplies that might be needed if the virus spreads, WHO Africa director Matshidiso Moeti told a World Health Assembly session. The other countries are Angola, Burundi, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, Zambia and, to a lesser extent, Uganda. Health workers have drawn up a list of 628 people who have had contact with known cases who will need to be vaccinated. In some cases, the virus is spread from contact with someone who has died from the disease. Symptoms include fever, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle pain and at times internal and external bleeding. The fatality was accordingly classified as a probable case of Ebola.
