Death toll from Nipah virus rises to 15 in Kerala”

"His body fluids have been sent to the National Institute of Virology at Pune to find out if it was a case of Nipah virus infection", he said.

Prasad, who was from Kerala's Palakkad, died five days after he was admitted to Alipore's Command hospital on May 20. However, some of his relatives said he visited the medical college hospital recently to meet a relative of his friend.

In Kerala, the deadly virus has claimed lives of 14 people so far.

He was working as a Senior superintendent in the Kozhikode District Court.

The Nipah virus is a zoonotic disease that is naturally transmitted from vertebrate animals to humans, while human-to-human transmission has also been documented.

"Till such time the report from the NIV in Pune is received it can not be confirmed whether it was a case of Nipah virus or not", the spokesman said.

A 28-year-old native of Kerala's Karassery, Akhil, became the latest victim of the Nipah virus, taking the total death toll to 15 in the state.

It has now been close to a week since the dreaded Nipah virus outbreak hit Kozhikode in north Kerala. According to initial reports, the virus was spread by fruit bat.

According to the World Health Organisation, the source of the virus has not been determined as yet, meanwhile, fruit bats have been found to be a natural host of the virus.

The outbreak of the virus infection, which is a newly emerging zoonosis that causes severe disease in both animals and humans, is suspected to be from an unused well which was infested with bats.
