Federal Bureau of Investigation urging people to reboot routers, due to malware threat”

Sofacy is the same group believed to be responsible for numerous recent attention-grabbin Russian hacks, such as the hack of the Democratic National Committee during the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign.

"The FBI recommends any owner of small office and home office routers power cycle (reboot) the devices", the FBI said on Tuesday.

So, now, when you reboot your router, it throws a kink in their system, essentially destroying the part of the malware that allows hackers to spy on your activities.

The FBI's recommendation comes on the heels of a newly discovered malware threat called VPNFilter, which has infected over half a million routers and network devices, according to researchers from Cisco's Talos Intelligence Group.

"Although devices will remain vulnerable to reinfection with the second stage malware while connected to the Internet, these efforts maximize opportunities to identify and remediate the infection worldwide in the time available before Sofacy actors learn of the vulnerability in their command-and-control infrastructure".

'The actors used VPNFilter malware to target small office and home office routers.

Several companies, such as Google, Eero and security firms Norton and F-Secure, are trying to make routers and their security easier to understand.

This includes routers manufactured by Linksys, MikroTik, Netgear and TP-Link. Of course, you can never be too careful, so let's talk about ways to fix the problem and, hopefully, avoid it going forward.

Investigators have identified the problem as something called VPNFilter.

Of course, a factory reset will kill the malware for good, but that's no good to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

CNET said that process is simple, and usually requires little more than holding down a reset button on the router. The bad news: It's a pain in the butt because when it's done, you'll have to reconfigure all your network settings.

Many experts also recommend that users update to the latest firmware on their router, then perform a factory reset on the device. CNET recommended checking your model's instruction manual for help with both steps.

The FBI advises people to update their routers so they have the latest firmware, just like you do with your cell phone. Cisco's report said VPNFilter can survive until the affected device is reset to its factory-default settings.

Meanwhile, TP-Link officials say they are aware the malware targets one of their router models, and are investigating.
