Singapore Airlines (re)launches world's longest flight from Singapore to NY”

(Photo: Aero Icarus from Zürich, Switzerland [CC BY-SA 2.0 (], via Wikimedia Commons) With the A340 not being an economically viable aircraft for the route and revenue no longer high enough to sustain the flight, the airline decided that it would stop the service in November 2013, nearly ten years after starting.

Singapore Airlines will use the long-range Airbus A350-900ULR (ultra-long-range) for the flights, which will be able to carry 161 passengers, but won't be available to economy travellers. SIA now has 21 A350-900s in its fleet, with 46 more on order including seven of the ULR variant. The services were suspended after the aircraft used at the time - the Airbus A340-500s - were returned to Airbus.

"Since then, our customers had been asking us to restart the nonstop route" an airline spokesperson told Newsweek.

Singapore Airlines Ltd (SIAL.SI) said it would launch the world's longest commercial flight in October, a near-19 hour non-stop journey from Singapore to the NY area. It was reported in 2015 that the big three Middle Eastern carriers were eyeing the plane, but none have since ordered the aircraft. The aircraft was specifically designed for fuel efficiency and is capable of flying 11,160 miles.

The Airbus will have a two-class layout, with 67 Business Class seats and 94 Premium Economy Class seats. The first A350-900ULR is due for delivery in September, with all seven due for delivery by the end of the year. The seats will be the same to those found onboard the airline's current A350s.

According to the airline's statement, the new aircraft will increase passengers' comfort as it features "higher ceilings, larger windows, an extra wide body and lighting created to reduce jetlag", as well as a carbon composite airframe that "allows for improved air quality due to a more optimized cabin altitude and humidity levels".

Its carbon composite airframe also allows for improved air quality due to a more optimised cabin altitude and humidity levels, according to Singapore Airlines.

Non-stop Singapore-Los Angeles flights are also planned with the A350-900ULR.

It also serves New York's JFK airport, and Houston in Texas - although both these connections now involve a pause, in Frankfurt and Manchester respectively. Another potential city for ULR flights is Houston, which is now served via Manchester. New Zealand, meanwhile, plays host to the longest flight route in the world, Doha to Auckland flown by Qatar Airways (14,529km), along with the third longest - Dubai to Auckland (14,200km).
