Google won't renew controversial drone project with Pentagon amid employee backlash

Google won't renew controversial drone project with Pentagon amid employee backlash”

Google, for its part, says it now intends to release a detailed set of ethical guidelines for developing artificial intelligence. A petition demanding that Google stop cooperating with the military and condemn the creation of AI weapons was signed by thousands of Google employees. The initial contract, which is set to expire in 2019, was signed when the company was more focused on pursuing military work, Greene reportedly said, but employee backlash has sparked the decision not to renew.

Greene told Googlers the backlash against the firm's involvement in the project had been awful for the company, Gizmodo reported.

Staff Sergeant Johnny "Joey" Jones (Ret.) on how workers from Google are protesting the company's involvement with the Pentagon's drone program.

Internal emails obtained by Gizmodo showed that Google's plans for the project may not have been as low-key as the company wanted people to think.

Google did not immediately respond to the online magazine's request for comment, Gizmodo said. "Partnering with the best universities and commercial companies in the world will help preserve the United States' critical lead in artificial intelligence".

The sudden announcement on Friday was welcomed by several high-profile employees. More than 200 academics and researchers also demanded that Google pull out of the deal. "Google should not be in the business of war".

Google in August 2017 hosted defence executives to demonstrate its artificial intelligence capabilities, according to a document shared with Google employees and seen by Reuters. The Defense Innovation Board, an arm of the Pentagon that makes technological recommendations, declared that winning the global race to adopt artificial intelligence was as important as "nuclear weapons in the 1940s and with precision-guided weapons and stealth technology afterward".

Singer, who studies war and technology at New America, a Washington research group, said numerous tools the Pentagon was seeking were "neither inherently military nor inherently civilian".

The military, Work said, wants to further develop AI "computer vision" techniques that can process the video from powerful sensor programs such as Gorgon Stare, a drone technology that can capture full-motion video of an entire city. AI could also be used to pinpoint submarines using sonar data.

Maven had an initial budget of $70 million (£52.4 million).
