Japan urges caution on any North Korea agreement

Japan urges caution on any North Korea agreement”

US President Donald Trump says he is looking forward to reading a letter from Kim Jong-un, due to be personally delivered by one of the North Korean leader's top aide's later on Friday local time.

Kim Yong Chol, vice chairman of the North Korean ruling party's central committee, was allowed into the United States despite being on a USA sanctions list.

Pompeo said that after a series of meetings he believes the talks are going in "the right direction".

"It is an ironic and telling deviation from North Korea's insistence on being treated on an 'equal footing, '" Scott Snyder, a Korea expert at the Council on Foreign Relations, told the paper. The official, Kim Yong Chol, posed for photos with Trump outside the Oval Office, and they talked amiably at Kim's vehicle before he was driven away. "Steak, corn, and cheese on the menu". Trump called it a "very nice letter". That from Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

The historic meeting between Mr Trump and Kim Jong-un would be the first between sitting USA and North Korean leaders.

Trump had previously cancelled the summit on May 24, citing a "recent statement" by North Korea as the cause for the cancellation.

"It is pretty remarkable where we are, given where we were a year ago", when Trump and Kim were trading crude insults and threatening nuclear war.

Within days, three teams of officials in the U.S., Singapore and the Korean demilitarized zone began meeting on preparations for the summit. He becomes only the second North Korean official to meet with a sitting United States president, reports the New York Times.

The official, Kim Yong Chol, was greeted by White House chief of staff John Kelly, who led him to the Oval Office for talks with Trump and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, according to press secretary Sarah Sanders. It's the highest-level meeting between a USA president and a North Korean official since 2000. "I think it'll be a process. If it's a positive meeting I love it - if it's a negative meeting I'm not happy", he said.

"What we have to convince them is that, on the contrary, their nuclear program has made them less secure, that there's a better path forward", the official added. We're going to start a process. "But they have to denuclearize".

The two men left a 90-minute private dinner at a NY apartment on Wednesday night without providing details about their conversation. He was granted special permission to travel outside the NY area in order to meet with the president.

"Looking forward to meeting with Kim Yong Chol in NY to discuss @Potus potential summit with Chairman Kim", Pompeo tweeted, using the shorthand for president of the United States.

Pyongyang have denied any involvement in both incidents.

He was likely granted a temporary waiver to travel to NY, and further approval would be required to travel to Washington. Pompeo was accompanied by Andrew Kim, the head of a Central Intelligence Agency unit assigned to work on North Korea, and Mark Lambert, the head of the State Department's Korea desk.
