Puerto Rican death toll from Hurricane Maria 73 times official tally

Puerto Rican death toll from Hurricane Maria 73 times official tally”

The risk of heart disease, stroke and other health problems could worsen because of the magnitude of the storm, adding to longstanding health concerns in Puerto Rico. Hurricane Irma left about 130 dead past year; Hurricane Harvey, a companion of sorts to Irma, killed about 110.

The Atlantic: "The True Scope of the Disaster in Puerto Rico" - "As I spent time reporting from Puerto Rico three weeks after Maria, two things became clear: The storm had a staggering impact on the island, and it was nearly impossible to translate that impact to observers on the mainland".

The official death toll from the storm is listed as 64, but Puerto Rican officials have maintained they believe the number is far higher. But the high death toll is just one of the study's alarming revelations, such as the lingering effects of the storm on the island's older population. Not just because every Puerto Rican life lost during this catastrophe matters.

During the same trip, he cavalierly bizarrely tossed paper towels to local residents and lamented how much federal money was being spent on the disaster relief efforts. This is not simply a math exercise.

Will more Americans have to die before their government wakes up to their needs?

Destruction caused by Hurricane Maria.

The Harvard study, published Tuesday in the New England Journal of Medicine, found a lack of access to medical care was the primary cause for an increase in mortality rates in the roughly three months after Hurricane Maria made landfall on Puerto Rico on September 20.

And with Friday's official arrival of hurricane season, Dávila wonders whether Puerto Ricans will be better prepared.

The 2018 Atlantic Hurricane season is set to begin on June 1 and is estimated to be fairly busy. More than 93 percent of the people approached completed the survey " Increases in post-hurricane death rates were observed across age groups and were not a reflection of the migration of younger persons out of Puerto Rico after the disaster", the team reported. The Buckee team also said that households went, on average, 68 days without water, 84 days without electricity and 41 days without cell phone coverage. He thinks some of the deaths there falls on the lack of response.

But the estimated death toll might be inaccurate, CNN reported.

The study was based on in-person interviews. They found that 31 percent reported disruptions in medical services, and more than 14 percent said they were unable to access medications. "But I consider it a great honor, maybe because I know so many people from Puerto Rico that are such great people".

"There was a disaster caused by Irma and Maria, and then there was a disaster caused by the Trump administration, and their negligence", San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz said Wednesday after the higher death toll report. Ask yourself whether Trump would have thought - or acted - differently if the American citizens who were affected had lived not in Puerto Rico but in Texas or Tennessee. The report has suggested that in order for the U.S. to mobilise an "appropriate response operation" and "account for the fate of those affected", the country should "review how disaster-related deaths will be counted".

"We decided, let's take the path of Maria and Irma ... and say we are going to focus on the hurricane paths because those are most likely the most impacted communities", said Jose Terrasa-Soler, the secretary of the organization.
