Sean Spicer: 'I Did Not Work for a Cartoon President'

Sean Spicer: 'I Did Not Work for a Cartoon President'”

An upcoming book by former top Obama adviser Ben Rhodes, "The World as It Is", portrays some of the former president's concerns and misgivings in the days and weeks after Donald Trump won the 2016 election.

"She's all alone", Obama said after a post-election meeting with Merkel, according to Rhodes' book.

During the 2016 campaign, as he consistently trailed in the polls, Trump repeatedly asserted that the election was being "rigged" against him, claiming - again, without evidence - that 1.8 million deceased Americans were registered to vote, and that more than 2 million people are registered to vote in multiple states and would vote a few times on election day.

"Maybe we pushed too far", Obama said.

But Rhodes also seems to acknowledge that Trump used some of the same lines of attack employed by Obama during the hard-fought 2008 presidential primary against Clinton - minus what Rhodes describes as the "racism and misogyny".

The World As It Is will be published on Tuesday.

According to the New York Times, Rhodes also writes that Obama called Mr. Trump a "cartoon", specifically pointing to his fascination with crowd size at rallies and political events, including his inauguration.

Obama, at first, was more optimistic than his staff following Trump's win. Obama had authorised a statement to be issued by intelligence agency leaders a month before the election warning of Russian interference but was thwarted from doing more because Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the Republican leader, refused to go along with a bipartisan statement. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe apologized for meeting with Trump after the election, and Obama implored Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to be a vocal defender of liberal values, the book says, according to the Times. Rhodes also says that the former President urged Canadian Prime Minister to take on a more visible role defending their mutual values, something that is perhaps most notable recently by the fact that Canada entered into what is essentially a replacement for the Trans-Pacific Partnership that had almost fallen apart after President Trump withdrew the United States from the agreement early in his Administration.

Rhodes writes that Obama was taken aback by the notion that a large portion of the American electorate chose a "cartoon" to replace him. One wonders, then, how much longer he will be willing to remain silent about what is happening to American politics and culture, and what it will be that may finally cause him to speak up and speak out. "That character has always been part of the American story".

Obama has largely remained quiet about Trump since leaving office, besides publicly criticizing Trump's decision to withdraw the U.S. from the Iran nuclear deal.
