Simona Halep rewarded for patience after risky start

Simona Halep rewarded for patience after risky start”

Simona Halep admitted to feeling "nervous" and "tight" in the early stages of her French Open first-round match, as she went down 0-5 to Alison Riske.

Halep, the runner-up at Roland Garros in 2014 and a year ago, cleaned up her game in the second set, with only five unforced errors after making 16 in the opener.

Alison Riske of the U.S. plays a return to Romania's Simona Halep during their women's singles first round match on day four of The Roland Garros 2018 French Open tennis tournament in Paris on May 30, 2018. "So I'm just out there trying to keep my rhythm and trying to play my best tennis".

Svitolina, a two-time quarter-finalist at Roland Garros, will take on Romanian 31st seed Mihaela Buzarnescu in the last 32.

Stephens, who did not play in Paris past year because of a foot injury, advanced at the clay-court Grand Slam with a 6-2, 6-2 win over qualifier Magdalena Frech. It was no surprise that the tally at the end of the 6/2 set totaled 26 points for Halep and 35 for Riske.

Halep likely wasn't with hers, either, as the top seed came out flat in the first set against Riske before turning things around. She missed the tournament previous year and went through a stretch of poor results after winning at Flushing Meadows.

Elina Svitolina saw off Roland Garros debutante Viktoria Kuzmova of Slovakia 6-3 6-4 to reach the third round of the French Open on Wednesday.

However, the Frenchman secured a break in the sixth to lead 4-2 and held his serve for 5-2.

Halep said. Eighth seed Petra Kvitova eased into the third round with a 6-0 6-4 victory over Spain's Lara Arruabarrena on Court One. The Romanian world number one stayed under wraps until the fourth day of the tournament after her opening match was cancelled on Tuesday evening because of a schedule backlog. Nishikori got past Benoit Paire of France 6-3, 2-6, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Halep, still hunting a maiden grand slam title, will face another American, Taylor Townsend, in round two. The 28-year-old raced through the opening set in only 24 minutes, and although she was pegged back after an early break in the second, a booming forehand sealed victory with a third straight game.

Play is underway on Day 4 of the French Open, with top-seeded Simona Halep facing 83rd-ranked Alison Riske of the United States in the last remaining match of the women's first round.

Novak Djokovic temporarily losing his mastery of the French language in his on-court interview after beating Spain's Jaume Munar.

The lengths, if not quality, of those matches were what amounted to on-court intrigue on Day 4 at the clay-court major, because there really was little in the way of stunning outcomes.
