Nipah claims two more lives in Kerala, minister warns of second outbreak

Nipah claims two more lives in Kerala, minister warns of second outbreak”

Talking to G Plus Ganesh Saikia, joint director of health services of Kamrup (Metro) district, said that they have appealed to the people not to panic and maintain calm.

"As a precautionary measure, it has been chose to further postpone the reopening of schools and colleges and holding of examinations", Shailaja said.

The state government's warning came as a couple of deaths occurred this week in Kozhikode district, the epicenter of the Nipah virus outbreak. The natural host of the virus is believed to be fruit bats of the Pteropodidae family, Pteropus genus.

The first outbreak of the disease was reported from Malaysia in 1998.

Experts say that since the symptoms are similar to other diseases, it becomes hard to initially diagnose it.

So far, a total of 196 samples have been tested for Nipah, of which 18 tested positive.

No human infection of Nipah virus reported in Delhi till date.

In addition, the MoPH has called on all travelers from Kerala to visit the nearest health centre or hospital immediately if they have any fever symptoms within six weeks of reaching Qatar.

After she fell ill, she was shifted from the Pariyaram Medical College to the Kozhikode Medical College hospital as she showed symptoms similar to that of the Nipah virus. Majority of the cases were found to have had contact with other Nipah cases. Two other outbreaks of the virus were reported in 2001 and 2007, respectively, in eastern state of West Bengal, claiming 50 lives.

An official with Department of Adult and Higher Education (DAHE) said that the department is monitoring the situation and getting regular updates through the BSA executives.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) may have just delivered a huge vote of confidence to Kerala, reiterating its status as a safe destination even as it recovers smartly from isolated Nipah virus infections. This, however, turned out to be false information with officials condemning the act.

"We are strengthening the surveillance to detect [Nipah] cases."
. With the help of ICMR and the World Health Organisation (WHO), the state government had procured about 50 doses of a monoclonal antibodies from Australia to combat the virus, he added.
