Miss America Axes Swimsuit Competition

Miss America Axes Swimsuit Competition”

Gretchen Carlson, the chairwoman of the Miss America board of directors, announced on "Good Morning America" that the event will no longer feature a swimsuit portion.

As one might imagine, nixing the swimsuit portion of the competition has caused quite a stir on social media, with opinions falling on all ends of the spectrum.

JUST IN: "We will no longer judge our candidates on their outward physical appearance".

Carlson said the evening gown segment would be revamped, but that contestants would be appreciated for their statements over their attire. "We are very sensitive to the fact that the swimsuit competition has always been our Achilles' heel".

As a local titleholder, I've never been more proud to be involved in the Miss America Organization. So guess what, you don't have to do that anymore. "We want more young women to see this program as a platform upon which they can advance their desire to make a real difference and to provide them with the necessary skills and resources for them to succeed in any career path they choose".

Hopper, former CEO of Intelligent Transportation Society of America, was Miss Arkansas 1983.

Waring says the pageant has changed in other positive ways since she won the crown 70 years ago. In July 2016, she sued former Fox News CEO Roger Ailes for sexual harassment; Ailes resigned shortly after.

This is also the first time the Miss America Organization's top three leadership positions are all simultaneously held by women.

The 2019 Miss America Competition airs live on ABC on 9 September.

The competition's contestants - representatives of all 50 US states - "will be asked to demonstrate their passion, intelligence and overall understanding of the job of Miss America", the show reported.

Carlson said the Miss America Organization will emphasize its role as a scholarship provider.

Carlson said on GMA, "We want to be open, transparent, inclusive to women who may not have felt comfortable participating in our program before. The swimsuit competition has been controversial since the early 1920s, but it's been retained because the majority of the people like it".

In the climate of #MeToo I think it's a really wise decision.

Carlson says the "competition", as they're calling it moving forward, will be less focused on beauty, and more focused on what the contestants actually bring to the table, intellectually.
