People Dead, 187 Hospitalized After U.S. Outbreak: CDC Officials Baffled”

Two of the victims are from Minnesota, with the others being from New York, California and Arkansas.

With the tainted vegetables now off the shelves and the growing season over, the FDA may never crack the case, frustrating consumer advocates who have called on the agency to issue rules that would speed up future investigations of food-borne illnesses, The Washington Post's Caitlin Dewey reported.

The casualties caused by the E. coli linked to romaine lettuce continue to rise, with almost 200 cases in 35 states of the United States. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention now reports that nearly 200 people have gotten sick in 35 different states.

This spring's outbreak of Escherichia coli illness tied to tainted Arizona romaine lettuce is likely over, USA health officials say, but not before claiming five lives. Some patients did not report eating the lettuce, though they had close contact with someone else who'd become infected.

An update from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revealed that four more have died from E. coli, bringing the fatality total to five since March.

The risk from the E. coli contaminated bacteria was said to have subsided over two weeks ago, according to health officials.

"Any contaminated product from the Yuma growing region has already worked its way through the food supply and is no longer available for consumption".

While all the lettuce came from the Yuma region, they don't appear to share a common farm or processing plant. The romaine lettuce you see in the stores right now is safe to consume. They are still, however, looking for the precise source of how the E. coli bacteria got into the lettuce in the first place.

The CDC reported 197 people have been fallen ill from the case, about half of which have been hospitalized.

Symptoms, which begin about three to four days after consuming the bacteria, can include watery or bloody diarrhea, fever, abdominal cramps, nausea and vomiting, according to the CDC. The majority of people who fell ill recovered within a week. Eighty-nine of the cases required hospitalization, 26 of those cases involved a potentially lethal kidney failure, and five cases resulted in death. This lettuce had become contaminated with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli O157:H7.
