CDC report reveals more than 45,000 Americans took their own lives in 2016

CDC report reveals more than 45,000 Americans took their own lives in 2016”

Suicide is now the 10th leading cause of death and one of just three leading causes on the rise.

The most extreme increase from 1999 to 2016 was in North Dakota, with a 57.6 percent rise.

Twenty-five states had suicide-rate increases of more than 30 percent.

"And, unfortunately, our data show that the problem is getting worse", Anne Schuchat, MD, principal deputy director at CDC, said at a press briefing, reports Medscape.

The CDC said the nation's suicide rate is growing among many age groups.

In fact, researchers found that more than half of people who died by suicide during the study period did not have a known diagnosed mental health condition at the time of death.

Many people who died by suicide, according to the report, had recently experienced hard life events such as relationship problems, physical ailments, financial stress and job or home loss.

About 45,000 people committed suicide in the U.S.in 2016.

The high proportion of older people who are white and low rates of religiosity in New Hampshire may also play a role, she said. In Nevada, the only state that saw a decrease, the rate fell by 1 percent.

Democratic U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill of Missouri said Monday that she is supporting federal legislation to provide funding for the U.S. Department of Agriculture to establish help lines and provide suicide prevention training for farm advocates.

"Our data show that suicide is more than a mental health issue", Schuchat said.

To the knowledge of her family and investigators, Spade did not have a previously diagnosed mental health condition, though her sister Reta Saffro has said she suspected that Spade had begun drinking heavily as a way to cope. Suicide is now the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S. The stigma associated with mental illness or fear of seeking help is indicated by the statistic that more than half of suicide victims didn't have a known mental-health issue, she said. Those with known mental health conditions were mostly men, but they were less likely to use firearms.

"The findings further reinforce the need to address suicide prevention through a robust, coordinated, multisector approach that combines health care system efforts with community efforts", the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention said in a statement about the report.

'Conditions like postpartum depression and menopause [may put some women at a higher risk], and, for women in general, stereotypes of being the flawless mom and employee, the stigma associated with a need to "balance" all of that can cause pressure as well, ' said Dr Ali. Suicide is very often an impulsive act, and a person who contemplates it can readily survive if no lethal weapon is at hand.

For example, if you are anxious someone is feeling suicidal, don't be afraid to ask the question and "open the conversation", Summers said. Keep them safe, and possibly remove items that can harm them. Be there with them, and listen to them. 4. Employers, schools and communities can help people feel supported and unashamed to seek help.

For immediate help if you are in a crisis, call the toll-free National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255), which is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. However, teens who aren't likely to reach out could be internalizing what they see.
