Donald Trump says he may pardon late boxing legend Muhammad Ali

Trump said he is considering "thousands" of pardon applications, including heavyweight boxer Muhammad Ali, who died in 2016.

He lost his boxing licence because of the fallout and was not allowed to return to the ring until 1970. "The U.S. Supreme Court overturned the conviction of Muhammad Ali in a unanimous decision in 1971".

The president, while speaking to newsmen before he departed for a Group of Seven summit in Canada, also said he would reach out to National Football League players who had been urging criminal justice reforms for their recommendations of people who had been treated unfairly.

Ali's attorney on Friday said the sentiment was appreciated, but a posthumous pardon was "unnecessary".

Per Jacqueline Alemany of CBS News, Trump said, "I'm thinking about Muhammad Ali" when discussing potential pardons. "There is no conviction for which a pardon is needed".

Trump said that he wasn't thinking about pardoning either man, as neither has yet been convicted of a crime.

Trump said he was considering a number of other pardons too and said that the pardoning power was "a handsome thing" for presidents.

Ali was immediately stripped of his heavyweight title and convicted of draft evasion. "I want to do people who are unfairly treated like Alice [Marie Johnson]". Reality TV star Kim Kardashian West personally appealed to Trump to pardon the 63-year-old grandmother.

Trump has also floated a possible pardon for TV personality Martha Stewart and potentially commuting the sentence of former IL governor Rod Blagojevich, who was convicted on corruption charges in 2011.
