Muhammad Ali: President Trump mulls draft dodging pardon”

US President Donald Trump has said he is considering a pardon for the late boxing legend Muhammad Ali.

Ali died in June 2016 at age 74. He then floated Ali's name, despite the fact that the late boxer's conviction for draft evasion was overturned almost 50 years ago.

The U.S. Supreme Court threw out that conviction four years later, so it's unclear why Trump would offer a pardon to the former heavyweight and Olympic champ.

Trump told reporters as he left the White House for a meeting with in Canada with USA allies that his team was "looking at literally thousands of names" of people for potential pardons because they were treated unfairly or their sentences are too long.

If Trump pardons Ali, it would be his second act of clemency for a deceased professional boxer. Ali said he was a conscientious objector to the war and refused to report for duty.

Earlier this week, Trump issued a pardon for Alice Marie Johnson, a Tennessee grandmother convicted on charges of conspiracy to possess cocaine and attempted possession of cocaine.

Trump has reportedly become increasingly "obsessed" with pardons and enjoys talking about potential pardons with aides, The Washington Post reported Tuesday. He said he wants the athletes to tell him who they think has been treated unfairly by the justice system and he would consider pardoning them. And he wasn't very popular then.
