Nursery Rhyme Teaches Kids About School Shootings, Lockdowns

Nursery Rhyme Teaches Kids About School Shootings, Lockdowns”

In Massachusetts, a class of five-year-olds are learning this rhyme - set to the lullaby "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" - so they know what to do during a school shooting.

"Lockdown, lockdown, lock the door", the poster read.

Shut off the lights, say no more.

Georgy Cohen, from Somerville, Mass., posted a photo of the colorful sign hanging in her young daughter's class.

The 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School, in which 20 children between the ages of six and seven were killed, is the fourth deadliest mass shooting in the USA to date.

Speaking to The Boston Globe, Cohen said that while she was disturbed by the rhyme, she understood why it was there.

Not everyone agrees, and her post is sparking heated conversations online about the appropriate way to prepare young kids for the worst.

It's all done.<
Now it's time to have some fun!em>.

Cohen, who said the tour was part of a district-wide event for parents and children to get a preview of the schools they will attend after summer vacation, didn't want to name the school where she saw the poster.

In a joint statement to the Boston Globe, Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone and Superintendent Mary Skipper said that lockdown drills were a sad but necessary aspect of the education system, noting: "Unfortunately, this is the world we live in".

"I always worry", said one father.

"I'm only going to add one more comment to this: the school is doing exactly what they need to be doing, and I am glad for it".

Sung to the tune of popular nursery rhyme Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, the lyrics on a poster put up in a MA classroom will give any parent the chills. "When I was in kindergarten, we had fire drills".

So far in 2018, the U.S. has experienced 23 school shootings resulting in at least one injury or death.

The tweet has since gone viral, amassing more than 53,000 likes and 23,000 retweets as of early Friday.

As Healey and Cohen talked to CNN, their daughter was cheerfully playing with Legos, unaware of how conversations of guns, shootings, lockdowns and fear have become so commonplace. 'It is jarring - it's jarring for students, for educators and for families'.
