Syphilis, gonorrhea on the rise in England, data shows

Syphilis, gonorrhea on the rise in England, data shows”

We've been hearing for several years that a particularly nasty strain of gonorrhoea has been lurking around, that's resistant to most types of antibiotics.

"More work must be done to ensure people from these groups have access to the information and sexual health services they need to improve and look after their sexual health".

New data released by Public Health England (PHE) showed that there were nearly 46,000 cases of gonorrhea and more than 7,000 cases of syphilis in England in 2017.

In March, the first case of super-gonorrhoea was detected in the United Kingdom, in a man who is thought to have caught the infection having sex overseas in South East Asia.

Drops in chlamydia rise in gonorrhoeaThe humble condom remains the best way to protect yourself from sexually transmitted infections.

In 2017, there were approximately 422,000 diagnoses of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) made in England, around the same number that was reported in 2016.

Past year there were 422,147 cases of sexually transmitted infections recorded in England, and syphilis accounted for 7,137 of those incidents, CNN noted.

The case was linked to travel to south-east Asia, but Public Health England has reminded Global Positioning System to refer all suspected cases of gonorrhoea to specialist sexual health services (SHS).

Councillor Izzi Seccombe, chairwoman of the Local Government Association's Community Wellbeing Board, said the rise in attendances was placing a "significant strain" on council resources.

'Unless greater recognition and funding is given to councils to invest in prevention services, a reversal in the encouraging and continuing fall in STIs is now a real risk.

According to the Marion County Reportable Diseases and Conditions report from 2016, the most common reportable disease in Marion County was chlamydia, with 1,740 cases that year.

Chlamydia cases also remain a huge chunk of STIs, although new cases decreased by 2 percent.

"Sexually transmitted infections pose serious consequences to health - both your own and that of your current and future sexual partners", said Gwenda Hughes, a consultant scientist and head of the sexually transmitted infection section at PHE.

'The impact of STIs can be considerable, with some causing infertility, pelvic inflammatory disease and harm to unborn babies.

She said that there should be consistent and correct use of condoms with new and casual sexual partners as well as regular check-ups and testing to determine and treat these infections early.
