Trio of New ISS Astronauts Blast off to International Space Station

Trio of New ISS Astronauts Blast off to International Space Station”

Aunon-Chancellor took off from the Russia-leased Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on Wednesday, along with Sergey Prokopyev of Russian Federation, who works for Roscosmos, and Alexander Gerst of Germany, who works for the European Space Agency.

The Soyuz MS-09 ship has successfully entered a designated orbit and is set to dock at the space outpost Friday. According to a release from NASA, the launch has been scheduled for 7:12 a.m. EDT, but the coverage will start approximately an hour earlier on NASA TV.

The spacecraft, launched this day into space by the carrier rocket Sozuz-FG, went into space and began its flight independently.

The trio only have a total of one previous space mission between them - 42-year-old Gerst's debut mission aboard the ISS was in 2014 - making this one of the less experienced space station crews in recent times.

But new NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine, this week is talking openly about a very different future the International Space Station and space travel in general.

The docking, as well as the entry of the astronauts into their new home, will also be live streamed on NASA TV, with the coverage for the former beginning at 8:15 a.m. EDT.

These three astronauts would be joining the three spacemen, namely NASA's Drew Feustel, the commander of Expedition 56; NASA's Ricky Arnold; and Oleg Artemyev of Roscosmos, already aboard the orbiting space station.

All three would remain onboard ISS until December. They have been living on the five-bedroom house-sized space station (from the inside) since March 21 and will introduce all the systems and safety procedures to the newcomers. They have been preparing for a June 14 spacewalk.

This crew continues the long-term increase in crew size on the USA segment from three to four, allowing NASA to maximise time dedicated to research on the space station. She was again rescheduled for the Soyuz MS-09 flight as the original space crew member, astronaut Jeanette Epps, got suddenly eliminated from the Prokopyev-Gerst crew in the month of January.
