United Nations chief: Oceans will have more plastic than fish by 2050

United Nations chief: Oceans will have more plastic than fish by 2050”

There is a rubbish truck full of plastic entering our oceans every minute, with plastic packaging use predicted to double by 2020 and quadruple by 2050, while globally, the level of recycling is only around 14% - it's clear we can not recycle our way out of this problem. World Environment Day is the "people's day" for doing something to take care of the Earth.

On Twitter, Guterres pledged to abolish the use of plastic bottles in his office, and he did that starting on Monday, removing all plastic bottles from his office, conference rooms and Department for Public Information.

For more than a decade, Rwanda has raised awareness about the benefits of life without plastic bags to maintain a clean and healthy environment. Many household items are made either partly or wholly from plastic, and while this material has been around for about 50 years, it can now be found in every corner of the world.

The Day has been celebrated across the world to raise awareness on current and emerging environmental issues such as pollution, overpopulation, biodiversity conservation, global warming, among others. "He said, the National mission on cleanliness and sanitation "Swachh Bharat Abhiyan" has special focus on plastic waste management". Common environmental issues include air and water pollution, loss of biodiversity and climate change.

In his latest edition of "Mann Ki Baat' radio programme, PM Modi had urged people to shun the use of plastic and protect the environment".

He led the sensitisation walk to Jabi Lake, where they cleaned up the plastics in the Lake, saying no effort would be too great in the resolve to improve a lot of the people. According to MacArthur Foundation, there are over 150 million tonnes of plastic in the oceans at present, which means about 1 tonne of plastic for every three tonne of fish.

Consultant with the IISc, Mr Mahesh Kashyap strongly recommends that e-commerce companies should stop excessive use of plastic for packaging.

On the occasion, the Prime Minister released postage stamp on the theme beat the plastic pollution and publications. I also invite Canadians to share their ideas on how we can move Canada toward zero plastic waste.

A ban on disposable plastics in India's capital New Delhi has had only limited impact "because of poor enforcement", the report said.

The United Nations warns that 360 million tonnes of plastic is produced each year, and levels are set to nearly double to 619 million tonnes by 2030, with cigarette butts, drinks bottles and caps and food wrappers the most common single-use plastics.
