Aletta a major hurricane in the Pacific”

The Eastern Pacific hurricane season runs from May 15 through November 30, with peak activity from July through September.

The storm has maximum sustained winds near 120 miles per hour. It was upgraded to a Category 3 storm on Friday.

Hurricane Aletta erupted into a major hurricane in the East Pacific overnight.

Fortunately, the hurricane poses no direct threat to land, however, a second named storm may be brewing in another area off the Mexican coast and should it develop into a tropical storm, it would earn the name Bud.

Aletta is located around 450 miles southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico.

Churning over warm waters that can provide fuel and with relatively little wind shear to disrupt its towering thunderstorms, "there are no obvious reasons why Aletta should cease intensification", the National Hurricane Center said. A dome of high pressure over northern Mexico is steering Aletta away from land and forecasters expect it to continue its west-northwest track over the next few days.

The centre said Friday morning that swells generated by Aletta will begin to affect portions of mainland Mexico and the west coast of Baja California Sur later in the day. The first eastern Pacific hurricane forms on June 26 on average.
