Salmonella outbreak linked to pre-cut melon

Salmonella outbreak linked to pre-cut melon”

The CDC said on Friday that 124 people have been sickened in 36 states after contact with live poultry, such as chicks and ducklings in backyard flocks.

The FDA is working to identify a supplier of pre-cut melon to stores where ill people shopped. No deaths have been reported.

The Illinois Department of Public Health is reporting six cases of Salmonella that match a multi-state outbreak strain.

The investigation into the outbreak is expanding rapidly. Both chains are cooperating with the investigation and have removed fruit associated with the outbreak from their shelves. Of the 60 cases reported, 31 (66%) have been hospitalized due to illness associated with the infection.

"In interviews, 55 (74%) of 74 ill people with information available reported contact with chicks or ducklings in the week before their illness started", the CDC said. Sixty cases have been reported in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri and Ohio. They include cramps, fever and diarrhea and while most healthy people can recover without seeking medical care, babies, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems may suffer from a more severe form of illness, the release said. In rare cases, Salmonella infection can cause death unless the person is treated promptly with antibiotics. The CDC indicated that pre-cut melons, including fruit salads, are a likely source of this multistate outbreak.
