What to do if you suspect someone is suicidal

What to do if you suspect someone is suicidal”

Suicide is now the 10th leading cause of death and one of just three leading causes on the rise.

The states with the greatest increase in suicides were North Dakota (57.6 percent), Vermont (48.6), New Hampshire (48.3) and Kansas (45). Twenty-five states saw an increase of more than 30 percent.

The Minnesota Health Department has increased efforts to identify at-risk communities to help reduce suicides.

Although there is no single cause for suicide, information from coroners' reports suggests numerous deaths followed relationship problems, substance use, and financial crises, according to the CDC. And suicidal ideation can arise from a plethora of quotidian experiences that aren't commonly documented or recognized as actionable mental health issues: financial distress, relationship crises, substance abuse, and so on. Those without a known mental health condition, according to the report, were more likely to be male and belong to a racial or ethnic minority.

Everyone can learn the signs of suicide, how to respond, and where to access help.
The most common method, regardless of whether a mental health disorder had been diagnosed, was firearms.

From 2007 to 2017, the number of suicides in Cuyahoga County has gradually increased, with some years being much worse than others, according to Hugh Shannon at the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office.

Suicide rates have waxed and waned over the country's history and tend to reach highs in hard times. In a country that has as many privately owned guns as it does people, this presents a unique public health problem.

Nationwide, the suicide rate rose to 15.4 per 100,000 in 2014-2016, up from 12.3 in 1999-2001.

In its report, the US government agency reports that in reported suicides that 54 percent of people who died by suicide did not have a known or reported mental health illness.

While the study emphasizes the need for more prevention resources, predicting suicides can be hard.

Health professionals didn't offer a reason for the increase but said suicides rarely result from a single factor. The numbers were highest among non-Hispanic whites, and among those ages 45 to 65 years old.

While it may be true that suicide rates are increasing across the board, research consistently points to a strong association between firearm access and suicide deaths, independent of other factors.

Advocates say everyone in the community can prevent suicide.

The CDC recommended a public health approach to suicide prevention, which would require government, healthcare, employers, education system, community organizers and the media to work together to take steps to bring down the rates.

If you or someone you know is struggling with depression or has had thoughts of harming themselves or taking their own life, get help.

Are you thinking about dying?

But Joshua Gordon, director of the National Institute of Mental Health, said that statistic must be viewed in context.
