Donald Trump says Russian Federation should be be allowed to rejoin G7”

It was just hours after Trump left the G7 meeting, and then threw the whole thing into disarray by tweeting from Air Force One.

The G7 summit in the Canadian province of Quebec ended on Saturday with the release of the final communique, but US President Donald Trump, who left the meeting ahead of schedule, had already put its results under doubt.

His words contained nothing he had not said before, both in public and in private conversations with Mr Trump, his office said later.

But Trump said that the notion that the G7 summit was in any way contentious was "fake news", telling reporters Saturday that the conference had been "so wonderful".

The comments were made in response to the U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada, Mexico, and the European Union. They also discussed speeding up talks and the future of Nafta, a Canadian government official said late Friday.

Trump also bluntly threatened to end trade with countries that refused to lower their tariffs on the U.S.

The G7 also committed to working to ensure they complement the multilateral trade agreements and to modernize the WTO to make it more fair as soon as possible, the document said.

After Trudeau said he was "happy to announce that we have released a joint communique by all seven countries" indicating that the USA had signed on, Trump announced that the U.S. would reverse its decision and not sign on to the statement after all.

Hours earlier, he criticised the Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for "being so indignant" at the imposition of United States tariffs, and railed against French President Emmanuel Macron for his alliance with Trudeau.

Sticking points also remain in the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta) renegotiations between Canada, the USA and Mexico, despite it being a key topic during the bilateral meeting between Mr Trump and Canadian PM Justin Trudeau.

Trump said he didn't blame the G7 leaders for "unfair" trade deals but rather their predecessors.

In a statement, a spokesman for Trudeau did not address Trump's insults.

He spoke of the importance of educating girls in remarks at the start of the meeting, which included his fellow G7 leaders and Christine Lagarde, the managing director of the International Monetary Fund.

He said the country won't hesitate to impose its own retaliatory tariffs.

But Trump's abbreviated stay at this Quebec resort saw him continuing the same type of tough talk on trade as when he departed the White House, when he accused Trudeau of being "indignant".

Trump claimed America had been obliged to levy the metals tariffs as it has been exploited as the world's "piggy bank" under existing arrangements, but his counterparts were equally determined to protect "rules-based" worldwide trade. Halting all trade with countries that don't drop tariffs is a "very profitable answer", Trump said. I think it would be good for the United States. He gets 50%, and they think we're doing - like they're doing us a favour. "When I'm telling them, they're smiling at me".

On the subject of Russia, Trump said he thought it would be "an asset" to have the country in what would be the G8.

European Union and Canadian leaders also appeared ready to unite against Trump at the upcoming G7 summit.

"Obama can say all he wants", Trump added, "but he allowed Russian Federation to take Crimea".

European leaders had put a fearless face on the results. "And so began a long litany of recriminations, somewhat bitter reports that the United States was treated unfairly, that the trading system was totally unfavourable to the United States, the American economy, American workers, the middle class", the official said.
