ORNL has 200 PFLOPS Supercomputer, Taking Performance Lead from China

ORNL has 200 PFLOPS Supercomputer, Taking Performance Lead from China”

Like Titan, Summit has a hybrid architecture with each of its 4,600 nodes containing multiple IBM Power9 CPUs and Nvidida Volta GPUs, connected together with Nvidia's NVLink.

US lawmakers who are anxious about the amount that China is spending on AI and quantum computing, will see the supercomputer as move towards technological supremacy, especially as Beijing has vowed to strengthen its defense ties with Russian Federation as a foil to American military might. The most powerful system in the U.S until Summit had been the Cray-built Titan, which delivers 17.59 petaflops of performance.

Both the computers are placed in Oak Ridge National Lab in Tennessee. The US plans to increase its funding in high-performance computing, Perry said, with the goal of building a system capable of exascale (1000 petaflop) computing by 2021. If a stadium built for 100,000 people was full, and everyone in it had a modern laptop, it would take 20 stadiums to match the computing firepower of Summit.

Summit is also optimized for AI in a data-intense world.

Summit's computing capacity is so powerful that it has the ability to compute 30 years' worth of data saved on a desktop computer in just one hour, Kelly said.

It takes up an eighth of an acre that is the size of two tennis courts with its peak energy consumption about 15 megawatts that can provide power to more than 7,000 homes. One of Summit's first projects will involve developing treatments for heart disease, Alzheimer's disease, and opioid addiction.

"We know we're in competition, and it matters who gets there first", Secretary of Energy Rick Perry told several hundred people at the Friday afternoon ceremony at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), a U.S. Department of Energy laboratory. "From the performance of scientific calculations at gigaflop speeds in 1988, to teraflops in the 1990s, petaflops a decade ago, and exaops today, ORNL continues to lead the way in supercomputing". The pioneering research of ORNL scientists and engineers has played a pivotal role in our nation's history and continues to shape our future. However, the first tasks for the system starting next year will be help with the Department of Energy's Innovative and Novel Computational Impact on Theory and Experiment (INCITE) program. That's what we're really all about.

The scientists have already started training Summit to read documents and abstract information in order to identify unseen disease factors such as genes, biological markets and environment for cancer surveillance.

It is reported by MIT Technology Review. "Summit is enabling a whole new range of science that was simply not possible before it arrived".

How fast do you think the fastest computer is? DOE's Office of Science is working to address some of the most pressing challenges of our time.
