Parker looking forward to ‘war with Whyte

Parker looking forward to ‘war with Whyte”

After Dillian Whyte revealed his surprise decision to fight Joseph Parker, we have analysed the reasons why this high stakes heavyweight bout was agreed.

Whyte was also in negotiations to fight Kubrat Pulev to be the mandatory for Anthony Joshua's IBF world title, in a purse bid won by third party promoter Epic Sports & Entertainment.

Whyte lost to his British rival in a seventh-round stoppage in December 2015, while New Zealander Parker's WBO reign was ended by a points loss to Joshua in a unification clash in March.

The Whyte fight, with a mandatory challenging position against Joshua going to the victor, certainly fits that bill.

The last time I was here, it was a great experience fighting in Cardiff in front of all those people and all those in the build-up and even though I didn't get the result I wanted, I feel like it's a great time to be back. "He's going to be very desperate, I'm expecting the best Joseph Parker because he can't afford to have back to back defeats, but that's exactly what he's going to get, and it's going to be another massive KO win for me at The O2".

After battling the division's biggest star in front of a huge audience, the Kiwi had only been offered fights on a far smaller stage against Alexander Ustinov and Bryant Jennings.

"I like challenges and I rise to them".

"One would hope that this fight leads to a world title shot".

Parker said: "We've both been in with AJ". It's a big mistake but I'm sure he thinks differently. "It came out of nowhere - it's not one that we planned". It'll be an incredible fight.

That turns Whyte's attention to the WBC where an eliminator with big-hitting Cuban veteran Luis Ortiz is a fight that would pack monetary punch and see the victor in line to challenge Joshua who is also that organisation's champion. We felt really welcomed by the support and I just want to fight anyone and everyone.

"I'm really happy with how things have things have worked out".

"He'll be seen as risky and a lot of guys are very mouthy and derogatory towards Parker in putting him down like [Tony] Bellew, or like Dillian Whyte", Higgins told Sky Sports in April.
