Jaguar Land Rover to Move Discovery SUV Production to Slovakia

Jaguar Land Rover to Move Discovery SUV Production to Slovakia”

"The decision to move the Land Rover Discovery to Slovakia and the potential losses of some agency employed staff in the United Kingdom is a tough one but forms part of our long-term manufacturing strategy as we transform our business globally", the firm added in a statement.

Jaguar Land Rover has said all new models will be electrified from 2020, though a spokesman wouldn't confirm whether the Range Rover models to be produced at Solihull will be made in all-electric versions.

JLR said there would be a "significant investment and technology upgrade", with the carmaker believed to be spending hundreds of millions of pounds to meet its low-carbon commitments.

In the short-term, more work than anticipated will move to JLR's new £1bn facility in Nitra, Slovakia, which is due to open at the end of the year.

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has said it will move production of its Land Rover Discovery SUV from Birmingham to Slovakia from next year.

Jaguar Land Rover first announced its intention to begin production of the Discovery in Slovakia in 2016, but did not mention at the time that the process could involve the migration of the model's entire UK-based production line.

The company warned that there may be some job losses in the United Kingdom as a result.

The next generation Range Rover Evoque is still in its testing stages, as recent spy shots suggest.

In total, 33,774 Land Rover cars were sold during the period while 14,507 Jaguars were bought. The E-Pace is also being built in China.

The group saw pre-tax profit slump to £364million in the three months to March 31, down from £676million in the same period a year ago. It also blamed uncertainty over Brexit and vehicle taxation.

Industry experts have warned that this plus concerns for the future of the sector following Brexit could mount pressure on United Kingdom auto makers - though brands such as Nissan and Vauxhall both recently committed to continued assembly at their British factories. The biggest plant in the company, it now employs 9,000 people.

Latest employee figures say there are 3,200 people employed at the Castle Bromwich site and a further 10,000 at Solihull.
