Kim, Trump arrive in Singapore for landmark summit

Kim, Trump arrive in Singapore for landmark summit”

Previous White House administrations had denied Kim, his father and grandfather, the "reward" of a face-to-face meeting with a sitting USA president.

The tone heading into the meetings is positive, but the risk that things will go awry is also very real. "We appreciate your hospitality and professionalism and friendship".

The standard thinking goes that he needs quick help to stabilize and then rebuild an economy that has suffered amid a decades-long pursuit of nuclear bombs, and that the North Koreans see a unique chance to win concessions, legitimacy and protection from a meeting with a highly unconventional US president who's willing to consider options past American leaders would not. That evening, he said in a tweet that "great progress" was already being made and that denuclearization - "not just a freeze" - was on the table.

Even though the big meeting isn't on the schedule until Tuesday in Singapore, there were still plenty of interesting developments over the course of the first full day that President Donald Trump has been in the city.

That may be even more important to Trump in the wake of the disastrous G-7 summit.

Whether they could agree to a draft document will likely determine whether Kim and Trump can sign a tangible "outcome" at the summit.

Kim arrived Sunday on a Chinese plane, not his official plane, which is called "Chammae-1" and named after the goshawk, North Korea's national bird. But on the ground in Singapore, he maintained a surprising restraint in his public comments about the historic encounter he clearly hopes may define his presidency.

Pompeo has disputed the notion that the president is moving the goalposts, telling reporters that Trump "has always understood that this was a process."

A Trump administration official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the USA side was entering the talks with a sense of optimism and an equal dose of scepticism given North Korea's long history of developing nuclear weapons.

At their summit in April Kim and South Korean President Moon Jae-in agreed to seek a peace treaty and Trump mused earlier this month: "Can you believe we're talking about the ending of the Korean War?"

Plans for the meeting almost foundered after Trump abruptly withdrew in May, citing North Korea's "open hostility" during negotiations. "The US position remains clear and unchanged".

Ponsei University's John Delury told Singapore broadcaster AsiaNews that Trump was a disruptive force in traditional diplomacy but his tactics of a one-on-one meeting could work.

"This is a leader who is really an unknown personality", Trump said.

Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un were preparing for their historic summit in Singapore as both sides tried to narrow differences before the two leaders come face to face on Tuesday.

The president's rhetoric has not mirrored that of his new secretary of state.

Rodong ran images showing Kim disembarking the Air China jet he used to fly to the summit as well as him meeting with Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. "We have to get denuclearisation, we have to get something going".

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, center, and his aides depart a news conference in Singapore on June 11, 2018.

Asked how long it would take for him to work out if Kim was serious about striking some kind of peace deal, Trump replied: "I think within the first minute I'll know".

Ahead of his arrival, Trump acknowledged he is heading into "unknown territory" for the meeting Tuesday. We will have seen each other. But any request for the United States to withdraw its 28,000 troops from South Korean bases would likely be rejected. "I know that Singapore is a very hot country so I wish that our respected Marshal stays healthy and comes back in good health".
