Robert De Niro gets standing ovation for Trump blast at Tony Awards

Following the outburst, a CBS spokesperson told Deadline: "Mr. De Niro's comments were unscripted and unexpected".

Without any warning, he announced: "I'm gonna say one thing".

Celebrities also responded to the speech, with "Angels in America" playwright Tony Kushner saying in the press room: "He's Robert De Niro".

Once again, Robert De Niro got in front of a crowd and used profanity while referring to President Trump. "To leave the prompter to say [f*u Trump.]", Kilmeade said.

The American theatre world's biggest night of the year at Radio City Music Hall saw De Niro onstage to introduce Bruce Springsteen's performance of My Hometown, but before doing the honours the legendary actor turned his attention from Broadway to the White House.

"And again, just like in 1971, the press is distinguishing itself with courageous, exacting journalism", De Niro said.

The gathered crowd seemed to agree with his message with applause, whoops and a standing ovation coming from the audience.

She noted that De Niro's remarks came on the heels of comedian Samantha Bee calling first daughter Ivanka Trump a "feckless c--." "Boy, do we need that now!"

Stewart acknowledged that everyone is "entitled to their opinion" but added that "it's offensive to many of us to hear that kind of language on live TV". "He talks about how he wants to punch people in the face, well, I'd like to punch him in the face".

In 2016, when Trump was the Republican presidential candidate, De Niro slammed him as "blatantly stupid", "totally nuts", and an "idiot".

De Niro is a highly respected actor, having garnered two Oscars for his roles in Raging Bull and The Godfather: Part II.
